Chalice Bearer -- Details
Receive communion at ('behind') the altar from the clergy. (Stand near, eyes on clergy, hands ready to accept wafer, and then chalice for dip/sip.)
After you receive, the Clergy will hand you a chalice and towel.
Follow behind a specific Clergy, staying back just a few steps.
Give those at the railing the chalice to dip their wafer, or to sip.
Watch the parishioner's hands to see if they are waiting to dip, or are ready to reach for the chalice, or want no wine at all.
Try to hold the chalice at about "elbow-height" ... I think that height makes it easier to reach for the dip.
If the parishioner reaches for the chalice so as to sip, maintain as much 'control' of the chalice as possible. Some people want to take it over, some people want to just tip it, some people want you to tip it for them (I think).
Most dip.
Most who sip, want to 'take' the chalice ... that is, they put two hands on, move it, tip it, return it. In that situation, I keep my hand(s) loosely around the stem of the cup, so that I can catch it if they lose it.
For those very few who sip but don't fully take control of the cup, I keep a firm hold on the stem, and let them do the part that they want to do ... move, tip, straighten up, and so on.
After a sip, wipe the rim with the towel. You might also rotate the cup a little, you might adjust the towel to use a new area for the next wipe.
As the wine is being [delivered], for each parishioner, say “The blood of Christ, the cup of salvation”.
Move to the next person (expeditiously?)
Do this until everyone has been served.
After all have been served at the altar rail, if there is anyone in the pews who were unable to come up front, you may need to go with a Clergy and administer communion in their pew. Just continue to follow the Clergy individual who you are accompanying
Follow the Clergy back behind the altar. Hand the chalice back to the Clergy, return to seat.
